One experiment shows that when the Coke comes in contact with stomach acid it creates a surprising and worrying gaseous reaction.

To recreate the reaction in our stomach, the experiment used a substance similar to stomach acid to which they added Coke. The results were immediate, and frankly rather frightening.

The liquid boils as the two substances come in contact with each, and increase in intensity until the formula runs over the edge of the glass. The mixture then begins to harden and smoke.

The result is a burning black mass that resembles tar, and the scientists aren’t even able to move the stirring rod.

This experiment may be enough to put you off the fizzy drink for good. But, just in case that cold can of cola still seems tempting, here's some effects that Coca-Colahas on the body:

What does Coca-Cola do to the body?

Everyone knows that drinking sugary drinks just isn't good for you. But, scientists have discovered that you can start experiencing the effects of Coca-Cola just one hour after drinking it!

British pharmacist Niraj Naik concluded that the mere sugary-ness of Coke should actually make you throw up. However, a chemical ingredient in the drink called phosphoric acid dulls the taste and helps us keep it down.

But, that doesn't stop your blood sugar and insulin levels from skyrocketing. The liver then turns all this sugar into fat storages.

Then 40 minutes after consuming your can, your body would have absorbed all the caffeine in the drink, causing your pupils to dilate and your blood pressure to increase. And, just five minutes after that, your dopamine levels would have increased. This is the 'feel good chemical' that controls the pleasure and reward centres in the brain. According to Naik, Coca-Cola affects the brain similarly to Heroin, as the dopamine will trigger cravings for another can.

An hour after you drink a can of Coke the fun begins to end. This is where you'll start to get drowsy and irritable.

But, this reaction is not unique to Coca-cola and is basically the same for all sugary caffeinated drinks. Some studies have even shown that these types of beverages can even lead to an increase in the risk of both strokes, dementia and diabetes due to the long term effects of sugar on the brain and body.
