Men Arrested On Paedophile Charges Used Fortnite's Chat Rooms To Groom Children

This dark affair is unfortunately neither the first nor the last case of its kind. A 41-year-old man has been arrested after having sex with a minor. With his accomplice, they used the Fortnite chat room to approach and attract young girls. More recently it was Youtuber JinBop, creator of content on Minecraft, who was caught by the FBI.

Residing in Broward, Florida, Anthony Gene Thomas has been charged with 22 counts. Among them, ‘illegal sexual behaviour involving a computer, illegal sexual activity with a minor and possession of child pornographic content’ reports Ashley Moody, prosecutor in charge of the case.

These strategies which allow for anonymity on the Internet are frequent and the resurgence of similar cases are worrying authorities around the world. Parents are told that the Internet can be a great place and some of us have had life-changing encounters on it. However predators also benefit greatly from this invisibility and monitoring the relationships between children and their online ‘friends’ can be very complicated…
