This problem went viral after a study found 60 per cent of 20 somethings could get the correct answer, down from a rate of 90 per cent in the 1980s.

Many participants quickly got an answer of 1 but this isn't the right answer! How do you solve this mathematical problem, then?

Well, you have to think back to your school days in order to answer the question. Here's the method that'll give you the correct result.

Don't forget about this mathematical rule

You firstly need to add the numbers in brackets (1+2). This leaves you with 6/2x3. Then, you need to divide 6/2 then there aren't any divisions or multiplications left in the question and all you've got to do is resolve the question from left to right.

The answer, therefore, is 3x3 and so is 9!
